MotoGP Barcelona GP: Francesco Bagnaia Takes Pole Position, Wins Sprint Race in Barcelona
The Round 20 of MotoGP 2024, Motul Solidarity Grand Prix of Barcelona took place at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya in Montmeló on November 16, 2024.
This time, the event follows the cancellation of the Valencian GP, due to flooding in the region, which was to be held on November 15–17 2024 as the last round of the championship.
In Qualifying, Francesco Bagnaia (Ducati Lenovo) took pole position with 1'38.641s, following Malaysian GP. This marks his sixth pole position of the season.
Aleix Espargaro (Aprilia Racing) was 2nd behind Francesco Bagnaia by 0.055s. Marc Marquez (Gresini Ducati) was 3rd.
The championship leader Jorge Martin (Pramac Ducati) finished 4th, and his team-mate Franco Morbidelli (Pramac Ducati) advanced to Q2 from Q1 and was 5th. Rookie sensation Pedro Acosta (Red Bull GASGAS Tech) was 6th.
Maverick Vinales (Aprilia Racing), Enea Bastianini (Ducati Lenovo), and Marco Bezzecchi (VR46 Ducati) will start on the 3rd row.
Fabio Quartararo (Monster Yamaha) advanced to Q2 from Q1 along with Franco Morbidelli, but finished 10th.- Francesco Bagnaia said, “This weekend yes. I tried to help someone yesterday. I tried to help someone today. I need to put more bikes between me and Jorge. So that was the plan and it worked. He's starting 4th so it's very close but I'm happy overall because I think we are fast in terms of pace, we are fast in the time attack, so we just have to be focused and prepare for this afternoon.”
- In the Sprint Race, Francesco Bagnaia took his seventh victory of 2024, and his team-mate Enea Bastianini was 2nd by 0.942s.
Jorge Martin finished 3rd, this result marks his championship lead was reduced to 17 points over Francesco Bagnaia.
If Jorge Martin finishes within 9th, he will earn to his maiden MotoGP title.
Aleix Espargaro moved down to 8th on the opening lap, having started second, but recovered to finish fourth.
Alex Marquez (Gresini Ducati) ran wide at Turn 10 on the final lap and was fifth. Following him, Franco Morbidelli finished 6th.
Marc Marquez was 7th after his bike clipped Pedro Acosta's machine on the opening lap.
Marco Bezzecchi, Brad Binder (Red Bull KTM), and Fabio Quartararo rounded out the top 10.
Francesco Bagnaia said, “The job is done for today but for tomorrow we need to repeat what we did. I think that more than this is impossible. Jorge did again a fantastic job so it's fantastic that this fight is like this. Let's see for tomorrow. Today I am very happy. We will do our maximum and what will be will be.”
