World Surf League: Brisa Hennessy and Barron Mamiya Win Hurley Pro Sunset Beach
The 2nd stop on the World Surf League 2022 Championship Tour, Hurley Pro Sunset Beach presented by SHISEIDO took place at Sunset Beach, Oahu, Hawaii.
Barron Mamiya (HAW) and Brisa Hennessy (CRI) claimed their first victory of WSL Championship Tour, respectively.
Especially, Barron Mamiya participated this event as the injury replacement for Costa Rica's Carlos Munoz.
But he defeated 11-time World Champ Kelly Slater, Billabong Pro Pipeline runner-up Seth Moniz (HAW), 2019 World Champion Italo Ferreira (BRA) and Tokyo Olympic Silver Medalist Kanoa Igarashi (JPN).
“I can't believe it, I literally can't believe it. I thought Pipe was the event I was going to do good in,” Barron Mamiya said. “I couldn't believe he let me go. I rode it all the way through Val's, I pretty much face-planted on the reef.”
Meanwhile, Brisa Hennessy has advanced to the final for the seventh so far, but she has finished runner-up in all of them.
She faced Hawaiian veteran Malia Manuel (HAW) in the Final, this marks her first Championship Tour victory and the first CT win ever for a surfer from Costa Rica.
“I have no words, I've dreamed about this moment but I never thought it was possible,” Brisa Hennessy said. “To all those people that supported me, I did it.”
Up next, the 2022 Championship Tour will head to Supertubos in Peniche, Portugal for the MEO Pro Portugal.
