The 1975 Premieres Cover of Sade's “By Your Side” on BBC Radio 1
British rock band The 1975 premiered a cover of Sade's "By Your Side" as a charity single raising funds for the British organization "War Child". The charity provides aid to children in war-torn countries around the world.
This track marks their first song since their second album "I Like It When You Sleep, for You Are So Beautiful yet So Unaware of It".
"By Your Side" was released by English group Sade in 2000. The song was lead single from Sade's fifth studio album "Lovers Rock".
The band frontman Matty Healy explained about the song;
“This song is for me, if you listen to Kanye, if you listen to Bon Iver, if you listen to Francis And The Lights… ‘By Your Side’ has so much of that identity. When I was listening to it, I was listening to it with this real sense of identity and thinking, ‘wow this is still really, really forward-thinking.' So me and [George Daniel] couldn’t help ourselves and when we were going to do a gig for War Child, you know the idea of it being for charity, meant the sentiment of the song took on a whole different meaning and it felt kind of perfect."-
- About the new album, he said;
"I think that whenever we do anything we’re always looking to self reference and now that we’ve got two albums and this little single, we’re always referencing ourselves. I suppose with everything we’re doing, it’s always provoking what’s going to happen next. But honestly, there’s so much going to happen next."
The band plans to collaborate with Skepta for their third album.
"We tried working with each other recently but it just didn’t work out. Just for loads of reasons – but we’re going to do something in the future. We’re going to do a tune together. We want to do like a ‘West End Girls’ Pet Shop Boys [kind of thing]. Maybe start a band, just me and Skepta do a band. Well we’re talking about it, so let’s see what happens." - source : Idolator
