Lorde Returns with New Song “What Was That”
New Zealand singer-songwriter Lorde returned with a new song “What Was That” on April 24, 2025.
It is her first music in four years since the 2021 album “Solar Power”.
The song is accompanied by a music video. Before the release of the song, Lorde asked her fans to “Meet me in the park Tonight 7pm - x x.”
And then many fans packed out Washington Square Park, NYPD shut the thing down at Washington Square Park just minutes before it was scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
Lorde shared on social media, “Omg @thepark the cops are shutting us down. I am truly Amazed by how many of you showed up !! But they're telling me you gotta disperse... I'm so sorry.”
The video was shot in New York following a meet-up in the park that was shut down by the NYPD.
The song was originally scheduled for release on April 25. But after the event, she moved up the single release by a day.
Lorde added, “Holy fuck, that was insane. I cannot believe you shut down the fucking park. I saw this thing that was like 'does Lorde not know she's famous?' I feel like I figured it out last night.”
The track was written by Lorde and James Harmon Stack. Produced by Lorde, Jim-E Stack, and Daniel Nigro.- Lorde said of the song, “I've never felt more intentional with every single piece of what I'm doing. There's such a deep ethos behind all of it, and it all braids together in the end. one of my favorite songs I've ever written.”
She added, “Late 2023. Back in new york. Deep breakup. Stopping birth control. Every meal a battle. Flashbacks and waves. Feeling grief's vortex and letting it take me. Opening my mouth and recording what fell out. Jimmy shouting in the background. A thousand hours of audio embroidery. Dan telling us where the moog bass should go. Andrew giving it teeth. The night we finally got the drums right. The sound of my rebirth.” -
