  • hard life Premieres New Song “othello” on BBC Radio 1

  • British alt-pop band hard life (formerly easy life), consisting of Murray Matravers (vocals/keyboard), Oliver Cassidy (drums), Lewis Alexander Berry (guitar) and Jordan Birtles (percussion), is back. The band premiered a new song “othello” on BBC Radio 1's New Music Show with Jack Saunders.

The song is the first single of 2025, following “tears” released last June.
Also, the track will appear on their upcoming third studio album. The band will announce details about the album this Friday.

Murray Matravers told Jack Saunders, “Hey, Jack, I just want to say that we're back. Listen first song. We were dropping off our new album. We're just so up right now. We're gas. So thanks for having us, dude. And more news coming on Friday.”

The band wrote and recorded the song with producer Taka Perry in Japan. The accompanying music video was directed by Charlie Drinkwater, who filmed it in Tokyo.
  • “'othello' is a pun on the board game, but also draws from the play's themes of trust, identity, and the destructive forces of unchecked emotions like jealousy,” The band frontman Murray Matravers said of the song. “Relationships - whether personal, romantic, or professional - are rarely straightforward, and after making difficult decisions you sometimes cross this threshold of no return. 'othello' captures that moment of uncertainty, where someone leaves your life, and there's a profound emptiness that takes over as you wallow in the unknown.”

Murray Matravers told Jack Saunders about the song, “Everyone thinks it's about Shakespeare. But no, I was actually about the game. When I used to work in the pub, there was this game Othello, and that's the first time I discovered it. And all these old geezers would play all the time, and it has these little black and white chips. And I thought was kind of a cool, cool metaphor.”

  • He continued, “So I spent about three months in Tokyo at the end of last year, and I wrote the entire album with my friend Taka Perry, who lives out here. We just hit it off. And like I said, just spent every single day in the studio for months, like, inseparable now. I mean, it was a difficult process, and I wouldn't want to relive it again. But I just kind of don't care as much about anything. Feel like a lot more free and kind of I feel like this was the album that I've always wanted to make. I didn't really know that at the time. It wasn't even trying to make an album. But it came so freely and so quickly, and we literally from the moment it was started to the moment it was mixed and mastered. Was only a couple of months, and I've never moved so quickly and been so sure about anything in my life. So I'm feeling good about it, man.”
