Allison Russell Releases New Song “Superlover” featuring Annie Lennox
Canadian singer-songwriter Allison Russell teamed up with former Eurythmics and Scottish singer-songwriter Annie Lennox to release a new song “Superlover” on March 25, 2025.
This marks the first time Allison Russell and Annie Lennox have worked together.
They met when they were both invited by Brandi Carlile to take part in one of Joni Mitchell's concerts.
The song is a plea for peace and will appear on her upcoming third studio album.
It was written by Allison Russell and JT Nero. Produced by dim star and Allison Russell.
The accompanying music video was directed by Mason Poole.
Allison Russell said of the song, “This song is a prayer. This song is a protection spell. This song is a plea. This song is a belief. This song is a question. Are you a Superlover? All children, our children. All children are our children. All of them. Everywhere. No exceptions. This song is a calling in. We are one human family. Equally.”
She continued, “Thank you Annie Lennox for singing with me & inspiring me. You are an Artist of The Ages. I love you so. Our Circle is Unbroken. Thank you Brandi Carlile & Our Lady Returner Joni Mitchell for bringing us together. Thank you to all who choose communication, coalition, hope and harm reduction over violence, abuse, despair and destruction. We can be Superlovers... Are you a Superlover? Love is the revolution.”- Annie Lennox said, “I had the good fortune to meet Allison a couple of years ago onstage. We'd both been invited by Brandi Carlile to take part in an amazing concert with the legendary Joni Mitchell. Allison and I were sitting next to each other and I knew right away that she was a very special person. She has such natural warmth and generosity of spirit.. A beautiful person, both inside and out, as well as having an absolute heart of gold.We performed together several times since then and our bond of kinship was sealed. As it turns out, we have many things in common as we share a similar world-view in terms of perspectives on injustice and our passionate love for music. To meet an artist who is also a powerful human-rights advocate can be a rare thing, so even with that factor alone we feel truly connected. When she asked if I'd be interested in recording with her I said 'yes' without hesitation..'Superlover' is one of the most soulful, compassionate songs you could ever hear, at a point when there's too much dissonance, polarization, aggressivity and hatred being openly bandied around the globe. It's an appeal for kindness and empathy, as opposed to violence and cruelty...It is medicine for the times and balm for the soul.I hope this song reaches as many people as possible and gives them a sense of comfort in the trials and tribulations of these 'most interesting' times.”

Allison Russell told Variety about when she met Annie Lennox, “I met Annie doing Joni Jam two years ago at the Gorge. When we do Joni Jam, we’ll rehearse for a couple of days with the whole band to make sure everyone’s super tight so that by the time Joni gets there, she can feel great. I sang backup and played some clarinet... I got there and Brandi said, ‘OK, you sit on the green couch, and I’m gonna put Annie and Sarah with you.’ I was like, OK cool. And I assumed these were like aides of Joni’s or a couple of Joni’s friends that aren’t musicians, because we create like a living room vibe. And 10 minutes later out walk Annie Lennox and Sarah McLachlan, and Brandi just looked over at me with this twinkle, and I just tried to act cool. But by the end of rehearsal, we were all just totally bonded because we have a lot in common. You know, we’re all moms, we’re all writers. And Annie and I, over that three days of that festival, just really deeply bonded. And this collaboration came out of that, and came out of Brandi going, ‘Oh, these two will love each other. I’m gonna sit them together on a green couch and sprinkle a little magic dust over them.’ So the slipstream just pushed us that way.”
