Thomas Rhett & Lanie Gardner Team Up for New Version of “What Could Go Right”
American country music singer-songwriter Thomas Rhett teamed up with Nashville-based singer-songwriter Lanie Gardner to release a new version of “What Could Go Right” on March 21, 2025.
The original version of the song is featured on his seventh studio album “About a Woman”, which was released last August.
The duet version is the second collaborative single from the album, following a new version of "Somethin' 'Bout a Woman" with American singer-songwriter Teddy Swims, which was released last November.
The track was written by John Byron, Josh Kerr, Rocky Block, and Thomas Rhett. Produced by Dann Huff, Julian Bunetta, and Josh Kerr.
Thomas Rhett said of the song, “In the back of my mind, I always envisioned 'What Could Go Right' being a feature on the album. When I first heard Lanie's cover of 'Dreams,' I started listening to her original music and became an instant fan. Her voice is incredible. I immediately wondered 'what could that sound like on 'What Could Go Right?''. So, we reached out to her, and she came over to my producer's house the very same day and absolutely nailed it. I'm so excited for her career. I think she's going to be an absolute superstar and I can't wait to watch her journey. I'm so glad she said yes to singing on this song with me.”- Lanie Gardner said, “It's honestly unreal. I used to blast Thomas Rhett's songs in my car, singing at the top of my lungs, and now I'm sitting here hearing my voice alongside his on a track. That's just wild to me. TR has been one of those artists I've looked up to for so long—his songwriting, the way he brings so much heart into his music, and how he's shaped country music over the years. He's just one of the best to do it. Getting to be a part of this song with him has been such a full-circle moment, and I'm beyond grateful he thought of me for it. I can't wait for everyone to hear it!”

Thomas Rhett told Apple Music about the original version, “I've tried to write that song a million different times, and it has always come out extremely corny and extremely cheesy. And a couple of the guys in the group are dating. One's married and has kids and all this kind of stuff. And I was telling them about this night that I had with [my wife] Lauren when I was like 21 years old. [We] both were in long relationships with other people, and both kind of ended our relationship with other people at the same time. But there was always, in the back of my mind, this wonder of like, 'I wonder if we could ever date again.' You know what I mean? Because we dated a little bit in high school. That whole song, I was telling the guys on the bus this story, and my buddy John is just writing, taking notes, soaking it all in. And I went to go get some food, and I came back, and they had written the verse and the chorus, and they were like, 'Does this do it for you?' And I was like, 'Oh my gosh. It's amazing.'” - source : Apple Music
