  • Laurence DaNova Returns with New Song “Real to Me”

  • Canadian singer-songwriter Laurence DaNova returned with a new song “Real to Me” on March 14, 2025.

The song is his first solo music in a year since the 2024 song “Resurfacing”.
As the single, it follows a cover of George Michael's “Fastlove” with Matfroninja, which was released last October.
The track was written and produced by Laurence DaNova, with production by his long collaborator Isaiah Gibbons.
He wrote the song back in 2021. Sonically, it is inspired by '80s sound and vibe, especially British pop-folk singer-songwriter Tanita Tikaram's 1988 album “Ancient Heart”.

Laurence DaNova said of the song, “'Real to Me' explores the complexities of navigating a friendship where your friend has done something inexcusable. It delves into the internal struggle of wanting to support them, knowing they need help, while also grappling with a conflict of values. The song not only highlights the pain experienced by survivors of sexual assault but also provides a perspective on the situation that is rarely discussed in music.”
  • He continued, “This song came into my head when I was living in Mississauga for work briefly in late 2021. I was out running errands one night and the melody just materialized out of nowhere. I wrote lyrics for it shortly thereafter-kind of as a stream of consciousness. They read as very disjointed but I knew they would make sense with the melody once I recorded it. Production wise there are similarities to my other music like the smooth/ambient sustained synths and oboe.”

  • He added, “For this song I was inspired by Tanita Tikaram's Ancient Heart album from 1987. I wrote the song knowing I wanted live drum sounds and big 80s sounding electric drum fills spread throughout it. There were also several songs I was listening to at the time that incorporated marimba. Naturally I had to have it in the song as well-so those are the bell sounding instruments you hear in the chorus.”
