Nell Smith's Posthumous Debut Solo Album “Anxious” Announced
Last October, Canadian singer-songwriter Nell Smith tragically died in a car accident at the age of 17.
At the time, she was preparing to release her debut album.
Her label Bella Union has announced her posthumous debut solo album “Anxious” will be released on April 11, 2025.
It follows the 2021 collaborative covers album “Where the Viaduct Looms” with Brighton-based indie pop-rock band Penelope Isles.
The album comprises 10 songs, including some songs that had been in the works since she was 12.
Penelope Isles' member Jack Wolter and Lily Wolter, who had worked with Nell Smith on the album, completed it in Brighton.
From the album, the title track was released as the first single off on February 6, 2025.
It was written by Jack Wolter, Lily Wolter, Nell Smith, Sage McBride, and Tim Newton. Produced by Jack Wolter and Lily Wolter.
The track was recorded in Brighton at Bella Union Studios with additional vocals recorded in Nanaimo BC with Howard Redekopp.- “It is still very painful when I realize Nell is gone”, said Wayne Coyne of The Flaming Lips. “I keep thinking I'll check my text messages from her. I'm sure she has a new drawing or new piece of a song or a new photo of her cat...and then I remember she is gone. Now when I'm listening to her singing these songs there is a brief fantastical joy. Her voice hits the ear, the ear tells brain this is the sound of love, the brain lets the mind fly through the billions of connections it has with Nell's life…but as it flies it also flies to her death…there is something holy that happens now.”

Additionally, Nell's family has announced the creation of the Nell Smith Memorial Fund to honor her legacy and support emerging musicians, which all proceeds from the new album will benefit.
