The Wombats Premieres New Song “Can't Say No” on BBC Radio 1
British alt-pop band The Wombats, consisting of Matthew Murphy (vocals/guitar), Tord Øverland Knudsen (bass), and Dan Haggis (drums), premiered a new song “Can't Say No” on BBC Radio 1's New Music Show with Sian Eleri.
The song is fourth single off of their upcoming sixth studio album “Oh! The Ocean”, which is set to be released on February 14, 2025.
Initially, the album was supposed to be released on February 21, 2025, but the band will release it a week early.
The band said, “um... wake up, pushed back to Valentine's Day. But I do like the fact that it's coming out on Valentine's Day. It's very very sweet.”
The song is accompanied by the Logan Fields-directed music video. The band filmed it in Manhattan Beach and El Segundo in Los Angeles.
Originally, the band wrote the song for their fourth album “Beautiful People Will Ruin Your Life”, but didn't finish it.
The track was written by Eli Hirsch and Matthew Edward Murphy. Produced by The Wombats and John Congleton.
The band frontman Matthew Murphy said of the song, “The song is about making decisions that in no way benefit my future self, and in fact cause my future self a lot of problems. I never truly learnt to live 'in' the moment, I was only ever living 'for' the moment and as if that moment was going to be my last.”- Matthew Murphy told Sian Eleri about the song, “It's kind of probably my favorite song on the record, and it's kind of, I think I love it so much as it's like juvenile, but wise and kind of sad and fun and kind of sounds like it was made on the moon.”
He continued, “I think, I mean, this song was supposed to be on our fourth album, and then it didn't quite work, and had an old chorus, and then randomly changed the chorus, like two months, really, before we started recording that, and then I fell back in love with it. The verses are seven years old and the chorus is brand new. It always kept kind of coming back and tapping me on the shoulder. There was just something always wrong with the chorus in my head, and then I spent some time on it, and something kind of magical happened. And it's suddenly my favorite one that song, probably.”
He added, “Definitely struggled with people pleasing. I think the three of us maybe to some degree, are a little bit like that. But I mean, the lyrics of this song is just about being a bit of a muppet, really, and trying to use anything at my disposal to escape my reality, which I've stopped doing now, and that's what the song's about.” -
Matthew Murphy shared on social media, “With the recent events taking place I wanted to say that, our hearts go out to all those affected by the fires across the Greater Los Angeles Area. Having lived in LA for over 8 years now and even though I'm one of the city's many transplants, I'm a very proud Angeleno and firmly believe that LA's best years are still yet to come.
