Rainbow Chan Releases New Song “Pomelo Water”
Chinese-Australian singer-songwriter Rainbow Chan released a new song “Pomelo Water” on January 10, 2025.
The song will appear on her upcoming third studio album “The Bridal Lament”, which is expected to be released in 2025.
The track is a modern feminist reimagining of the traditional ritual of brides bathing in pomelo-infused water performed by Weitou women in the lead-up to arranged marriage.
By blending traditional themes and modern production, the track transforms the ritual from a symbol of submission into a powerful act of self-awareness and rebellion, mocking the notion that women carry inherent bad luck that needs to be cleansed.
The track was written and produced by Rainbow Chan.
Also, 50% of the single’s bandcamp sales will go towards Palestine Children’s Relief Fund.- Rainbow Chan said of the song, “Historically, on the night before her arranged marriage, the bride-to-be would bathe in pomelo water to wash away her bad luck. She’s expected to shed her past and become a new person - a subservient wife. 'Pomelo Water' is my subversion of that narrative, thinking through what it means to face erasure in both historical and contemporary contexts. How can song keep resistance alive?”
