BATTLEFLAGG Releases New EP “Solastalgia”
Philadelphia-based singer-songwriter Jeff Hartwig's musical project BATTLEFLAGG released a new EP “Solastalgia” on January 7, 2025.
The EP is his first project in three years since the 2022 EP “The Blood Meridians”.
The EP is inspired by philosopher Glenn Albrecht's 2005 article on the subject, which describes it as “the homesickness you have when you are still at home.”
Jeff Hartwig anchors the songs on this concept, honing in on missed connections while one's known world disappears into the rearview. Images of storms, isolation, unrequited love, and a return to a radically changed place are all present in the Solastalgia songs, leaving the impression that, despite one's best efforts, the wheel still rolls.
The EP comprises 4 songs, co-produced by Jeff Hartwig and Daniel Knowles, featuring Robbie Bennett on keyboards, Bryan De Leon on drums, Kitten Kuroi on backing vocals, Adam Schatz on sax, Demian Bannister on guitar, Dylana Nova Scott on guitar and Daniel Knowles on bass.- Jeff Hartwig said of the EP, “Solastalgia is defined by philosopher Glenn Albrecht in his 2005 article on the subject as 'the homesickness you have when you are still at home,' where you may find your home environment changing in distressing ways. It is a lived evanescence of what you have always known, like standing in one place as the life, memories and places fade away. Unlike nostalgia, solastalgia is distressing and is often attributed to environmental or other changes completely out of one's control.”
He continued, “When listening to these songs, I want the listener to understand, and feel the power of, the simple snapshots described within, and how such moments are common to many. Hopefully, in understanding that the experiences in the songs are common to all of us, particularly in the face of massive change, the listener will find a deeper connection to the people and places around them.” -
