Hozier Performs “Too Sweet” on Saturday Night Live
Irish singer-songwriter Hozier appeared on Saturday Night Live to perform “Too Sweet” and a cover of The Pogues' 1987 “Fairytale of New York”.
This marks his first musical guest on Saturday Night Live in a decade. At that time, he performed “Take Me to Church” and “Angel of Small Death & the Codeine Scene”.
“Too Sweet” was released from his fifth EP “Unheard” back in March.
The EP features four songs originally intended for his third studio “Unreal Unearth”, which was released in 2023.
“Too Sweet” reached No. 1 on US Billboard Hot 100 and the UK Singles chart, as wellas other charts in Australia, Iceland, Ireland, New Zealand, and Norway.
It became his first number-one single in all seven countries.
The track was written by Sergiu Gherman, Hozier, Bēkon, Peter Gonzales, Stuart Johnson and Tyler Reese. Produced by Bēkon, Hozier, Sergiu Gherman, Peter Gonzales and Chakra.- Hozier told Variety about the song, “I didn't see it coming to this extent, for sure. I knew I wanted to release the song. I knew it was fun. It's a song that did not (come out originally) because there was a choice between two songs for the album, and 'Too Sweet' was kind of placed to the side. So I didn't necessarily expect this kind of reaction.”
He continued, “It's a song about somebody who wants to self-destruct and get trashed! You know, I've had a quiet laugh to myself about that. I've written songs that definitely deal with more complicated, more difficult themes, for sure. But I guess it's something that's fun and immediate and doesn't take itself too seriously, and that's part of its appeal. And it's also why maybe initially, when the choice came of putting it on the album, I thought that maybe it wouldn't have worked.” - source : NBC
