Missy Higgins Drops New Music Video for “When 4 Became 3”
Australian singer-songwriter Missy Higgins dropped a new music video for “When 4 Became 3” on December 20, 2024.
The song is featured on her sixth studio album “The Second Act”, which was released on September 6, 2024 via Eleven: A Music Company.
The album is her first body of the work in six years since the 2018 album “Solastalgia” and comprises 11 songs.
The video was directed by Claudia Sangiorgi Dalimore, who also created all videos of the album.
The track was written and produced by Missy Higgins, with production by Anna Laverty.
Missy Higgins said of the video, “To bookend the year, we have a new music video to release. This is possibly my favourite track on the album, it's called When 4 became 3. As you can probably gather, it's about how hard it is to reconcile when your household turns from a 4 person household to a 3 person household. And once again, the clip was made and directed by Claudia Sangiorgi Dalimore who has made all the clips for this album. She is incredible and I loved making this clip, running through the forest with a whole lot of wild women, screaming the devil out of us and burning the past. It was so cathartic. I hope you feel it too, when you watch it.”- She told Apple Music about the song, “This song was written from a place of really low self-confidence and a feeling of deep shame about what went on. And again trying to have a relationship and it just really not working because of the issues I was still grappling with as far as not being able to do the thing that I promised myself I would stick at till the end and give my kids that happy ending that I had always imagined for them. When I wrote that chorus-'You should know I hate myself'-it was such a devastating thing to sing out loud and I was like, 'Is this too full-on?' But then I thought, 'Bugger it, I'm making a decision to be as honest as possible on this album even if it's a really pathetic, unflattering view that I have of myself.'”

The new album recorded at night in her home studio once her children were asleep. Produced by Missy Higgins, Anna Laverty, and Brendon Love.
She said of the album, “So most of the demos are very quiet, I'm almost whisper-singing into my phone. When I went to record them, I wanted it to feel like I was still in that place where I wrote them-I wanted the songs to reflect that feeling of introspection and aloneness and quietness, and I wanted them to [have] the raw emotion of when I wrote them.”
