  • ELLDER Releases Debut Song “Don't Carry Things That Weigh You Down”

  • Canadian collaborative project ELLDER released their debut song “Don't Carry Things That Weigh You Down” on December 5, 2024.

The project consists of Toronto-based singer-songwriter Ben Kunder and Toronto-Los Angeles based singer-songwriter Carmen Elle.
The song captures the process of letting go and finding hope, coping with the trauma of nearly losing a loved one, and revisiting the weight of past relationships.
The track was written and produced by Ben Kunder and Carmen Elle.
Also, the song won Best Original Song at the Canadian Screen Music Awards.

Ben Kunder said of the song, “That first verse was my way of coping for months. It wasn't until my first songwriting session with Carmen that the song truly came to life. They immediately connected with the sentiment, and together we finished it in minutes. This song reflects our shared journey of healing and our deep connection as collaborators.”
  • He added, “'Don't Carry Things That Weigh You Down' is one of the most important songs, personally to me, that I've ever written and to have it connect with so many through the beautiful show that is Sort Of means so so much. I would sit for hours playing that piano line on a loop over and over while singing 'when you go through changes, who am I who am I'. It carried me through some really heavy times and I had a feeling it would become something special when the time was right.”

  • Carmen Elle said, “It's a special one. Ben Kunder and I wrote this in an unheated practice space in the dead of winter on an out of tune piano. It came together in minutes and sparked our creative collaboration which we are calling ELLDER. The song is called 'Don't Carry Thing That Weigh You Down'. It's a balm on a difficult day, a loving encouragement on a better day. You may have heard it on season three of Sort Of, and here it is reimagined as the duet it was the day we thawed our fingers just enough to write it together.”

They added, “And as a side note I want to share that I mixed and mastered this track myself and am really proud of how it turned out. I had a vision for how I wanted it to sound and it came pretty close to that vision.”
