  • Samantha Gongol Releases New Song “Planes Are Low”

  • American electronic music duo Marian Hill's lead singer and singer-songwriter Samantha Gongol released her second solo single called “Planes Are Low” on December 6, 2024.

The song and the debut solo song “Flash in the Pan” will appear on her upcoming debut solo EP, which is expected to be released in 2025.
The song explores themes of self-reflection, uncertainty, and the passage of time.
The track was written by Ben Blumstein and Samantha Gongol. Produced by Ben Zaidi.
The accompanying music video was directed by Matty Vogel.

Samantha Gongol said of the song, “I initially wrote 'Planes Are Low' after taking a long COVID walk in 2020. I remember the air felt thick, and it was unseasonably warm for winter. As I was about to turn in, a plane dipped under the clouds. I'm sure it was to get better visibility and escape the cloud cover, but it seemed almost as if it was flying dangerously low. It struck me as a metaphor for how I was feeling at the time. Everything felt wrong, kind of like the plane flying so low. It seemed like a natural follow up to 'Flash In The Pan', two sides of the same introspective coin. 'Flash In The Pan' feels like Samantha the character, while 'Planes Are Low' feels like we take a literal peek behind the curtain and you find her sitting alone, in her dressing room, taking off her glitter and sequins.”
  • She shared on social media, “One day in either October or November of 2020, I was taking a walk around my neighborhood. It was one of those confusing fall days where despite it being unseasonably warm, , there was still a cold that lingered in your hair and cheeks. Everything felt stuck that day. The air, the clouds, the lingering grey. I had to take off my jacket to finish the walk but as soon as I did I was cold again. I rounded the corner back to my house and as I did, a plane ducked beneath the clouds. Planes bound for Philadelphia International Airport always fly over my parent's house, so we would see them all the time. But this plane seemed low to the ground, almost unnaturally so. It felt like I could almost reach out and touch it. The metaphor gobsmacked me, as all good ones do. I kept repeating "the planes are low the planes are low" like some odd mantra so I wouldn't forget it.”

  • She continued, “Planes is really short. I would even dare to suggest it's not a fully fledged song. I kept trying to extend it but every time I did, it never felt right. As my project started to take shape it felt like a natural follow up to Flash. The video was filmed literally right after, on the same day, in the same outfit! It's meant to be a peak behind the curtain. It's the rehearsal, the fidgeting, the unsureness, the waiting. This little reflection came to embody where I was and how I felt at the time of writing it, and I hope you love it like I do.”
