Oswald Slain Releases Debut Song “Happiness is Overrated”
Bristol-based rock band Oswald Slain, consisting of Charlie Fitzgerald (vocals/guitar), Rhii Williams (drums), Ryan Rogers (synths), Chris Axe (bass) and Cydney Brown (acoustic Guitar), released their debut song “Happiness is Overrated” on November 8, 2024.
The band is formerly known as Little Thief. This time, Charlie Fitzgerald and Rhii Williams have been writing music together for over 10 years, and took the difficult decision to change the band name and move forward in a new direction.
The track was produced in-house in their DIY studio built in their back garden and pushes back against the pressures of being happy.
It was written by Charlie Fitzgerald, Rhii Williams, and Ryan Rogers who also produced the track.
The band lead singer Charlie Fitzgerald said of the song, “Happiness Is Overrated is a rise above misery and a rebellion against the pressures of being 'happy'. The song came out of a pretty low point in my life: Final lock down, locked up at home. Everything had kinda fallen apart in my musical world and we were just drinking corner shop wine and trying to keep morale up. I had been listening to Bob Dylan's '115th Dream' on repeat and loved the story-telling aspect of the lyricism, so enjoying writing something with lots of words and more of a storyline.”- He continued, “The lyrics sat on my computer for a few years and never really got used until one rainy day in January 2024, they found a final resting place in this big, sad, bar-crawl of a tune. The band loved the juxtaposition between the melancholy theme, and the upbeat swagger in the music, and it became the perfect introductory track to our new chapter as Oswald Slain.”

The band shared on social media, “In Jan this year we started writing and recording new material at home with our pal Ryan Rogers. not really knowing what would come of it but because making music is what we love to do. It's with great pride we are able to put this first song up and out into the world and a huge privilege to be a part of such a great music scene where expression and human communication is cherished. we are forever grateful.”
They added, “We tried to be as honest to ourselves and as authentic as possible with this new direction and can only hope this first song is something that will bring you as much joy listening to it as it did for us to make it.”
