  • bdrmm Announces New Album “Microtonic”, Premieres New Song “John on the Ceiling” on BBC Radio 6

  • British shoegaze band bdrmm, consisting of Ryan Smith (vocals/guitar), Jordan Smith (vocals/bass), Joe Vickers (guitar) and Conor Murray (drums), has announced their upcoming third studio album “Microtonic” will be released on February 28, 2025 via Rock Action Records.

From the album, the band premiered the first single called “John on the Ceiling” on BBC Radio 6 Music with Steve Lamacq.
The track was written by Conor Murray, Joe Vickers, Jordan Smith, and Ryan Smith. Produced by Alex Greaves.

Jordan Smith said of the song, “John on the Ceiling was written when I first started to experiment with synthesis and drum loops in recordings, owing a lot to the minimalism heard in dance music. Once in the studio we incorporated Conor's electric drum beat, Ryan's surrealist vocal and Joe's dense guitar textures into the arrangement. As the first tune finished for Microtonic, John set a precedent for the records emphasis on rhythm rather than melody and the ethos Microtonic embodies. It fucking flies.”

Ryan Smith added, “The themes surrounding John on the Ceiling are that of confusion and doubt. When something ends and another starts, you lure yourself into a false sense of security that the mistakes made won't happen again. This happens over and over until you are paralysed in limbo. Can people ever truly change?”
  • The album comprises a 10-track, featuring guest appearances from Sydney Minsky Sargent of Working Men's Club and Olivesque of Nightbus, produced by Alex Greaves.

Ryan Smith said of the EP, “I felt very constrained writing a certain type of music to fit the genre [we were known for] but something lifted and I felt more free to create what I want. And what I seem to be doing at the moment is a lot of electronic music – taking influence from different spans of electronica, from dance music to ambient and more experimental sources.”

  • The band said, “We wanted to create a record that encapsulates the dystopian elements of the modern world we're living in. Creating a meld of the uncanny, escapism and the anxiety that seems to act as a constant fog nowadays. It's a record we're incredibly proud of, and arguably our best work. Diving more into the left field inspirations, we have finally honed our sound. This is bdrmm.”
