Rats On Rafts Announces New Album “Deep Below”, Shares New Song “Japanese Medicine”
Dutch post-punk band Rats On Rafts, consisting of David Fagan (vocals/guitar), Arnoud Verheul (guitar), Natasha van Waardenburg (bass) and Mathijs Burgler (drums), has announced their new album “Deep Below” will be released February 7, 2025 via Fire Records.
The album is their first LP in four years since the 2021 album “Excerpts from Chapter 3” and comprises 9 songs.
Highlighting different shades within the monochrome landscape compared to their previous, more colourful albums; the album sees them dive deeper into their psyche, questioning our relationships with nature, religion and each other, coming of age whilst raising their heads from the underground.
From the album, the band released the second single called “Japanese Medicine” on November 6, 2024.
The song is a haunting minor chord piece driven by debris of icy chiming guitars, galloping drums and waves of lush synths. lyrically it gathers memories of teenage friendship, littered with cigarettes, life-changing records, punctuated with the dark thoughts and the demons they summon up.
The band lead singer David Fagan said of the song, “Japanese Medicine is aimed at a former version of myself, that person’s gone but occasionally I miss him because life seemed very promising and unpredictable.”- He continued, “When I first listened to the vocal demo I recorded, I was amazed but really saddened. I had no idea it would come out that way and affect me like that. When I sent it to the others, they all had the exact same feeling. The song touched us all and at the end of the day songs are about carrying emotions. It will always be a special one to us.”
The accompanying music video was directed by David Kleijwegt and Reinier van Brummelen.
David Fagan said of the video, “Working with David Kleijwegt and Reinier van Brummelen on the video was an experience we never had before,” Fagan adds. “The day of shooting was set up so incredibly well with the team they assembled. It felt really great to be part of that focused team. Seeing Reinier and David at work and being part of that was very inspiring.” -
