Romy & Sampha Premiere New Song “I'm on your team” on BBC Radio 1
British indie rock band The xx's Romy and London-based singer-songwriter Sampha teamed up to premiere a new song “I'm on your team” on BBC Radio 1's New Music Show with Jack Saunders.
This marks the first collaboration between Romy and Sampha. But Sampha previously opened for The xx.
The track was written by Romy Madley Croft and Sampha Sisay. Produced by Thomas Bartlett.
Romy said of the song, “It's a love song but lyrically, it's honest and truthful. Like 'we've had the magic and dreaminess but now we've been through things together, so here we are and I'm putting in the work.'”
Sampha added “I love the idea of being part of a team, that you have to show up for each other, and from there you can create an even deeper connection. The evolving nature of a relationship crystalizes somewhere between the chorus of 'And I hope the way I feel tonight, is the way I feel for life' and the closing 'I'm on your team, but I can't always coach you.'”- Romy told Jack Saunders about the song. “Sampha and I have both released albums. We're kind of like winding down now from, like, touring a lot, and it feels like a really nice time just to share this piece of music. We've kind of lived with it for a little while, and it's just really nice to sort of let people, let it become their song now. And Santa's been like a wonderful friend to me in doing this solo project. And like, when, like, gave me loads of like, amazing support in that project. So it's just really nice.”
She continued, “I mean, lyrically, I always love trying to reach to kind of very real and deep places. And I think that's something that Sampha and I like really share. And like when we were writing this song, a lot of it comes from us having just like, conversations with each other. And I feel like I can really open up Sampha that we like have really talked about things I find hard to talk to with other people. And I think that's my favorite part of collaboration, when he can have that connection. And I think I've been in my sort of project, been like, kind of surrounding these more vulnerable lyrics with pop dance, like, sort of soundscapes, and to really just be singing more in, like a more bare place over Sampha's amazing piano playing was, yeah, it was different, but it felt so, so good to go there, and it just, it brings all the lyrics a lot closer.” -
Sampha said, “We both were in relationships, and we both could write this song because we both had our own experiences about this kind of subject, even if it's from different viewpoints. And we both have been in long term relationships. And we could, like, sort of, I guess, empathize over the journey. Their relationships have and kind of, like, that's echoed in the title of the song, I think it was a good song for us and a good subject for us to like, write about something poignant that we both have kind of been through here, or going through.”
