  • Jess Kallen Releases New Song “Heidi&I”

  • Los Angeles-based singer-songwriter Jess Kallen released a new song “Heidi&I” on October 16, 2024.

The song is the third single off of their upcoming sophomore album “DON'T BLINK!”, which is set to be released on January 24, 2025 via New Professor.
On the track, Jess Kallen explores the complex relationship they have with their mother between bossa nova rhythms in its verses.
The track was written and produced by Jess Kallen, with production by Maryam Qudus.
The accompanying music video was directed by Adrian Vega Albela Osorio.

Jess Kallen said of the song, “My mom and I are quite similar-adventurous of spirit, verbally feisty, emotionally enigmatic, and really stubborn. So friction simply comes with the territory. 'Heidi&I' is an attempt at getting closer to the heart of our clashes, and the ways we are inextricably reflections of each other. Musically, I wanted to reflect the dynamic and oscillating relationship with my mom-equal parts tender and challenging, from my vantage point. The verses are nestled in a bossa nova sort of groove, really introspective and subdued and hyper-personal. The loud, growly guitars in the choruses are the emotional releases, and a realization: the ways my mom and I clash are the ways we are actually very similar.”
  • The new album comprises 10 songs, which address gnawing personal quandaries surrounding the uncertainties of life in your twenties, the volatility of working as a musician, and the spirality of personal identity.

Jess Kallen said of the album, “'DON'T BLINK!', came out of a period of whiplash, as I (like so many) re-entered the world post-pandemic. I felt so overwhelmed and overstimulated at the time, like I was playing catch-up with my own expectations of who I was supposed to be by then-nearly ten years as an Angeleno, and more as a working musician.”

  • They continued, “Some of the songs arrived like odes accepting life's constant mutability ('Ginkgo!', 's t u c k', 'Love is a tunnel oblivion' 'Quarter Life Chrysalis'), while others felt more gruesome in their reckoning ('WTDTD', '2 Blades' 'Buzzzcut'). Listening back these days, I feel like I'm firing up old VHS tapes, nostalgic and a little surreal. The best part is how these songs' transmissions continue to transform and surprise me, changing depending on the season of my life. I think if they can do so for anyone who listens, then I've served the intent of this record.”
