Stevie Nicks Releases New Song “The Lighthouse”, Inspired by Overturning of Roe v Wade
American singer-songwriter Stevie Nicks returned with a new song “The Lighthouse” on September 27, 2024.
It is her first original single in four years since the 2020 “Show Them the Way”.
The song is inspired by the US Supreme Court decision to overturn Roe v Wade.
In 2022, the US Supreme Court overruled the Roe v Wade decision of 1973 that protected women's rights to have an abortion. That constitutional right was reversed by the overrule on the grounds that the right to abortion was not “deeply rooted in this nation's history or tradition”.
The track was written by Stevie Nicks, Magnus Birgersson, and Vincent Villuis.
She produced the track with American singer-songwriter Sheryl Crow and Nashville-based producer Dave Cobb.
Stevie Nicks said of the song in a statement, “I wrote this song a few months after Roe v Wade was overturned. It seemed like overnight, people were saying 'what can we, as a collective force, do about this...' For me, it was to write a song.”- She continued, “It took a while because I was on the road. Then early one morning I was watching the news on TV and a certain newscaster said something that felt like she was talking to me ~ explaining what the loss of Roe v Wade would come to mean. I wrote the song the next morning and recorded it that night.”
She added, “That was September 6, 2022. I have been working on it ever since. I have often said to myself, 'This may be the most important thing I ever do.' To stand up for the women of the United States and their daughters and granddaughters ~ and the men that love them. This is an anthem.” -
Stevie Nicks will perform the song on Saturday Night Live on October 12, 2024.
This marks the first time on the sketch-comedy show since 1983.
Earlier this month, she praised Taylor Swift's post endorsing Vice President Kamala Harris and urged her fans to “choose the candidate that speaks to you and your beliefs” when voting in the US presidential election.
She shared on social media, “As my friend Taylor Swift so eloquently stated, now is the time to research and choose the candidate that speaks to you and your beliefs. Only 54 days left until the election. Make sure you are registered to vote! Your vote in this election may be one of the most important things you ever do. Love, Stevie Nicks Childless Dog Lady”
