Alice Costelloe Announces New EP “When It's the Time”, Shares Title Track
London-based singer-songwriter Alice Costelloe, formerly Al Costelloe, has announced her upcoming EP “When It's the Time” will be released on November 1, 2024 via Moshi Moshi Records.
Alice Costelloe is better known as a member of American-British dream pop duo Big Deal. She started her solo career as Al Costelloe in 2023.
This time, she signed to Moshi Moshi Records as Alice Costelloe and will release the first solo EP under her new label.
From the EP, she released the title track as the first single on September 9, 2024.
The track was written by Alice Costelloe and produced by Mike Lindsay.
Alice Costelloe said of the song, “I live right by an intense religious organisation,I don't want to say which one in case they damn me to hell even more, but they often knock on the door with leaflets about saving your soul because the end times are coming. I had started writing 'When It's The Time' about moving on from a romantic relationship but the preachers that kept knocking at the door took the song in a different direction as I started to think about the end of things in general, beyond relationships, to the end of life, the end of the world, and this became a sort of theme of the EP.”- She continued, “When I brought this track into the studio I'd been playing it live with my band for a while, so in my mind it was just going to be a pretty straight forward classic sounding type of song with bass, guitar and drums. But thanks to the magic of Mike and his many machines it started going in a way more interesting and electronic direction. I really loved how it combined the classic 60s feeling I'd started with, with the experimentation of all the different synthesisers in his studio and it kind of became the benchmark of what we wanted the EP to be. This track was also the first time I'd ever got to play a real organ which was pretty exciting for me!”
The new EP comprises a 5-track, which she recorded with producer Mike Lindsay at his Margate studio, MESS.
Thematically, the EP poses questions about mortality, and “how to make yourself a better life in a world that often feels apocalyptic” in her own words. -
Alice Costelloe said of the EP, “This record opened up my eyes to a whole different way of doing things, not just sonically but also in terms of how to actually enjoy making a record, to have fun with it. It felt like no idea was too silly to explore (even a one minute long recorder solo!). That freedom, encouragement and lack of pressure, combined with Mike's insane talent made me feel I could truly be and express myself because I knew it was all going to turn out ok. And as a result, even though it doesn't sound much like what I've done before, it feels the most 'me' of any record I've made.”
She added, “In a way, it's about endings, moving on from old relationships, and contemplating the end of life and the end of the world, but it's also about desire, desire to dance or drink a glass of wine with someone, but also desire to figure out how to make yourself a better life in a world that often feels apocalyptic.”
