  • Four Tet & Ellie Goulding Premiere New Song “In My Dreams” on BBC Radio 1

  • British electronic music producer Kieran Hebden, aka Four Tet teamed up with British singer-songwriter Ellie Goulding to premiere a new song “In My Dreams” on BBC Radio 1's New Music Show with Jack Saunders.

This marks their first collaboration in four years since the 2020 Four Tet's “Baby”.
For Four Tet, the song is his third single of 2024, following “Loved” and “Daydream Repeat”.
While, for Ellie Goulding, the song is her second collaborative single of 2024, following “Free" with Scottish DJ Calvin Harris.
The track was written by Ellie Goulding and Kieran Hebden. Produced by Four Tet.

Kieran Hebden said of the song, “At the end of last year, Ellie texted me with a couple of voice notes for a song idea, words and melodies she was singing into her phone, and she asked me if I could use them to make something. She's told me in the past she likes to send me vocals that I can just use as sound and turn into whatever I want (which is how our song 'Baby' happened a few years ago). I found other noises to go with it and made 'In My Dreams.' She added some new vocal parts, but we ended up keeping the voice note recordings as the main vocal. I guess the first take is often the most magical. I wanted to make something that was all about juxtaposing harsh, aggressive sound with the delicate and intimate.”
  • Ellie Goulding said, “Most of you know I grew up on electronic and dance music and discovering Fourtet in my early 20's was like diving into a treasure chest... When I reached out to him a while back he never questioned it or had any kind of cynicism and just asked me to send him some vocals sometime. The simplicity of a great producer like Kieran sampling my voice like an instrument weaved in is something I always craved and even in the most minimal way is how I felt I was getting the maximum pleasure out of what I do as a vocalist. Feel like so many producers missed that about me, that's why I appreciate him so much. I also feel like so many of those same producers wana be him and I get why! He's totally unique, totally perfectly inconsistent and looks beyond genres, sweeter structures, prettiness and straightforwardness in sound, but still makes any kind of frenzy sound so beautiful, puts serenity at its most blissfully potent and loves a pop sample too. Thqnk you for your music and for working with me Kieran, sometimes I do feel like I'm a little part of actual works of art.”

  • Four Tet told Jack Saunders about the song, “It's just me and Ellie. She just sent me like a text with a voice note, and was like, I just come up with this, I've got this melody and these words and things, what do you think. I just listening to it and the song came out of that. I love that. But it's just this little communication on the phone from somebody having an idea somewhere else one day. and then they just contact you and the music sort of unfolds out of that, but it's a little moment of how communication, just turning into a record.”

Ellie Goulding added, “I think I re-recorded the vocals. We recorded them in a fancy studio. And they just didn't have the same. I don't know something, the magic had been lost. But I knew when I woke up from a nap or something, sounds like me. And I had these lyrics, and I immediately texted Kieran. And Kieran said, 'Here's my voice, just like an instrument, which is how I always want it to be heard.' So that's why I send it straight to him.”
