Halsey Releases New Song “Ego”
American singer-songwriter Halsey released the fourth single called “Ego” from her upcoming fifth studio album “The Great Impersonator” on September 6, 2024.
The album is set to be released on October 25, 2024.
Halsey first performed the song during her secret show at KOKO in London in August.
At that time, she told the crowd, “I've been teasing a new song for the past couple of days. You guys are the first people in the world to hear it. Lowkey even before some of the people who work at the label.”
The track was written by Greg Kurstin, Gregory Aldae Hein, and Halsey. Produced by Greg Kurstin, Wyatt Bernard, Michael Uzowuru, and Austin Corona.
Halsey said of the song in an interview with Spout Podcast, “The album is kind of just like this exploration of-, it's these thought experiments, right, of like, 'What if I was Halsey in the 70's? What if I was Halsey in the 80's? The 90's? The early 2000's? And you know, I think that 'Ego' is definitely that sort of 90's Halsey coming to life a little. I wanted it to sound like something like a pop rock song we would have heard on the radio you know when we were younger.”- The accompanying music video was directed by Halsey herself.
She said of the video, “I really wanted to pull from these like 90's influences, so there's like a lot of like Wong Kar Wai, but then it's also kind of like Natural Born Killers and it's like little Tarantino and like you know it's got this super 90's pulp. It's kind of Fight Club because it's like the dual personalities thing, you know? Just pulling for all these like classics, um, and honestly Mr. & Mrs. Smith was like a huge influence and it's not a 90's film but Angelina and Brad are obviously huge icons of that time, so they just, like, you know, they came to mind immediately. Yeah, the video is such a blast, super fun, it features like two different versions of me trying to totally like sneak attack and destroy each other and I had a blast making, it was my first music video that I ever directed.” - The new album is her first body of work in three years since the 2021 album “If I Can't Have Love, I Want Power” and comprises a 18-track. Also it is her first release under her new label Columbia.
Halsey said of the album, “I made this record in the space between life and death. And it feels like I've waited an eternity for you to have it. I'll wait a bit longer. I've waited a decade, already.”
She dropped a trailer for the album last month. In the clip, she said, “I really thought this album might be the last one I ever made. When you get sick like that, you start thinking about ways it could've all been different. What if this isn't how it all went down? 18-year-old Ashley becomes Halsey in 2014.... Am I still Halsey every time in every timeline? Do I still get sick? Do I become a mom? Am I happy lonely? Have I done enough? Have I told the truth? I spent half my life being someone else. I never stopped to ask myself. If it all ended right now, is this a person you'd be proud to leave behind? is it even you?”
