  • Molly Payton Releases Debut Album “YOYOTTA”

  • London-based singer-songwriter Molly Payton released her debut album “YOYOTTA” on August 30, 2024.

The album comprises a 10-track, produced by Molly Payton and Oscar Lang.
The album title was named after the third track “You’re On Your Own This Time, Again”.
She has left her record label in 2022 and the album is the first release as an independent artist.
Molly Payton recalled, “By this point I hadn’t been able to write property in about a year. I felt so lost, and suddenly this great big shadow that had been following me around felt unavoidable.”
She recorded the album with producer Oscar Lang over a month in friends’ bedrooms, at Molly Payton’s house and by making use of downtime in studios.

Molly Payton said of the album, “When we made this record I thought I wouldn’t be able to put it out. I was newly independant, and didn’t really know if there was a way forward for me after having a full team around me since I was 16. Oscar Lang came to New Zealand early 2023 for a holiday and thankfully reminded me that that is absolute bollocks and you can make good music and enjoy doing it for nothing. I absolutely love this album because I made it for me, with wonderful friends who care so much about what they do. I hope you love it too!”
  • Molly Payton told Hype Medium about the album, “The themes revolve around loss and dealing with loving someone who's hurt you and not being able to turn off that love. That is the big theme throughout the album, and also the importance of friendship, and my female friendships at this point in my life, and figuring out how to push through tough times and keep going when things are wrong.”

She continued, “I don't think it's like the best work I'll ever do or anything, I'm not gonna make any dramatic claims like that, but I do feel it weirdly feels like this is the beginning of my career, this album. I’ve written so much music before this, but I feel like that was like me very publicly figuring out what I like and what my taste is, and then this is the beginning. And everything that comes after this, I'm just so excited to make.”

  • Molly Payton explained about some tracks for the album.

    “Asphalt”
“Everything about the music industry and the creative process began to feel forced and I started to feel not only like I was making a product to sell to people, but that I was a product too. I came back to New Zealand to figure things out a bit and got a job so that music could become a thing that I do for the enjoyment of it again. Oscar Lang came to New Zealand to visit over the Summer, and it was the first time we’d worked together properly since we were in high school together in London. I knew I wanted to begin this project with something that captured the feeling of how lost I was feeling. I wrote ‘Asphalt’ the way I wrote when I was sixteen, in 20 minutes without any care for structure or radio playability or anything except capturing that feeling of restlessness and hope. Asphalt is the song that made me love making music again, and I am so grateful to it for that.
I picked it to be the first single and shot the music video before I met my new management or a label, because I knew no one would want me to make it a first single. ‘Asphalt’ is the song that made me love making music again, and I am so grateful to it for that.”

    “Accelerate” via Hype Medium
“That's my fun song. A super fun, easy song. Similar thing - it's about just throwing yourself into love. 'You make me accelerate' - it's just wanting to fucking go for it and forgive everything that's hard and fall in love and be happy. I love that song. I think that was one of the last songs for the album. I listened through the album, and there's like lots of rocky stuff and there's lots of acoustic stuff and it felt well rounded, but there wasn't really anything that I just thought would be fun to play live. So I wrote “Accelerate” in like a couple hours, and we recorded it with the band, and it was a really fun experience from beginning to end. And the music video as well was like the most fun I've ever had on a shoot.”

    “Get Back To You”
“The track is about realising you’ve been so caught up in yourself that you’ve lost sight of the person you love and wanting to find your way back to them. When I met my last boyfriend, I was navigating a low point in my career, while also barely dealing with the loss of my father who had just gone to prison. Although I desperately wanted to just be happy with him and be a good partner I felt at times like I was being pulled underneath all of these things, this song was a way for me to reach out to him and show him I was trying.”
