SOFI TUKKER Releases New Album “BREAD”
American electro-pop duo SOFI TUKKER, consisting of Sophie Hawley-Weld and Tucker Halpern, released their third studio album “BREAD” on August 23, 2024.
It is the first release as an independent artist. The album was created when the duo had got back on the tour unlike the previous album “WET TENNIS”.
Two years in the making, the album comprises a 10-track, featuring guest appearances from Kah-Lo, MC Bola, and Channel Tres.
The duo recorded parts of the album in Brazil, which has always been a big influence in their sound. Two songs “Cafuné” and “Jacaré” were sung in Portuguese.
The album title “BREAD” is an acronym for Be Really Energetic And Dance.
SOFI TUKKER said of the album, “Bread is pure energy, and usually shared together. In cultures around the world, people break bread to bond and to get energy—and that's exactly how we hope people experience this album. BREAD is also an acronym for Be Really Energetic And Dance. Sometimes, the remedy we need is that simple.”
Sophie Hawley-Weld added, “All around the world, people break bread together to connect and come to common understandings. That's exactly what we hope this album does for people. It's an invitation to put down our differences and get back in touch with what is fundamental...”- Sophie Hawley-Weld told Bbeatportal about the album title, “It's that simple. I hope it gives people the energy that they need to do whatever they need to do that day, and feel themselves while doing it. Bread is also a symbol - for wealth, abundance, sensuality, devouring life or appetite; it's also a sexual word in a lot of different languages. When you go into it, it's pretty infinite...”
Tucker Halpern added, “It's an everyday thing, you probably say it every day. It gives you energy. It brings people together... it explains a lot of things that we want our music to do in such a simple everyday word.” -
SOFI TUKKER explained about some tracks for the album.
“Throw Some Ass”
“When the brain is anticipating pain, it creates more pain,” she revealed. “Eventually my neural pathway of pain got so strong that, even when there was no structural reason for it, I became chronically in pain. The inverse was true too. When I told my body that it's safe and free, I was able to re-write the neural pathway. I was so mentally happy and free in the moments of throwing ass that my brain re-wired itself.
The song started where I was working on some Brazilian funk-inspired drumbeats,” added Tucker on the track's instrumental. “This was right after we had spent some time in Brazil at Carnaval last year. At 6:00 a.m., we went into this nightclub under the parade. Someone was playing a baile funk set, and I was blown away. The song really gives the vibe of that club, Carnaval, and Brazil.”
“Hey Homie”
“'Hey Homie' is one of our favorite songs on the album. It represents both of us in that Soph has always wanted to make bossa nova and Tuck has always wanted to make drum and bass, and we managed to do both with this one. It's about the kind of love that is never 'realized' and it never necessarily becomes romantic. Not many songs are written about this type of relationship, and yet it's super universal. It's bittersweet and beautiful. It's such a unique friendship. We love each other lowkey like homies; it's special even though it's not romantic. We wanted to celebrate the love between friends that will always have an enduring bond. We hope it feels like a warm hug while you're dancing.”
“Woof” with Kah-Lo
Sophie Hawley-Weld: “We always knew 'Woof' was special. Fans may recognize it from when we DJ'ed it in our livestream in 2020. We added a cool guitar sample, plus some live guitar, and Kah-Lo slays her verse. There are actually five languages on the track: Portuguese, French, German, English, and Kah-Lo is speaking Yoruba. It's very down-the-middle SOFI TUKKER. Tucker's vocal, my Portuguese, the electric guitar-it feels true to what we've always done.”
Tucker Halpern: “This is our personality. Sophie sings in four languages. I sing in a sarcastic deep voice. It has a guitar riff. It kind of reminds me of 'Purple Hat,' which is our biggest song, though 'Woof' is unique. It features our friend Kah-Lo, who's an amazing Nigerian artist, and one of my favorite voices.”
Kah-Lo: “I loved collaborating with Sophie and Tucker on this song. We've done so much throughout our careers together but never a song. They're my favorite people to work with in any capacity.”
“Goddess In Disguise” featuring MC Bola
“Two years ago, we ended up at 6 am at a Baile funk party, and I was so blown away. I didn't fully get it until then, but I was like, 'wow!' It changed my musical thinking about so many things, and I was always trying to implement it.”
“Spiral”
Sophie Hawley-Weld: “It's about coming to terms with the end of a relationship, but it sounds hopeful, dancey and energetic.”
Tucker Halpern: “I've always loved '90s, early-2000s dance music and Eurodance kind of genres. We made this song with a nostalgic sound. It's a club banger that brings you back to 2002 and the video is perfect with Heidi.”
“Jacaré”
“Jacaré means alligator in Portuguese but it's also a derogatory word for women who like women. We wanted to take the word and flip it into something positive and joyful rather than a term used as an insult or threat. This song is super fun and sexy and inspired by our time in Brazil. We wrote the lyrics together with our longtime collaborator and friend, the Brazilian poet, Chacal. It's been a highlight in every DJ set we've done recently. It's a celebration of Brazil, of women and the LGBTQ+ community.” - source : Apple Music
