Skylar Simone Releases New EP “SHIVER”
Los Angeles-based singer-songwriter Skylar Simone released a new EP “SHIVER” on August 16, 2024.
This marks her first project in three years since the 2021 EP “Earth Signs”.
Also, it is the first released under her new label Def Jam Recordings.
The EP comprises a 5-track, produced by Dernst 'D'Mile' Emile II, Yonatan Watts, Taylor Hill, Dominique Sanders, Scribz Riley, J. Valle, The Elements, Trackside, and Rook Monroe.
She recorded the EP in London and wrote over 20 songs.
The EP is inspired by Janet Jackson's 1986 album “Control”.
Skylar Simone told Ones to Watch about the EP, “This EP plays with masculinity and femininity and how to blend those two worlds together, which is cool. It's cool to hear a woman be in charge and in the power seat, but I like doing it in a way that feels very not aggressive and concerned. I feel like Janet did that very, very well, and I drew a lot of inspiration from her in that sense. She is the blueprint for that kind of world.”- She added, “This specific EP was actually very challenging; I'll be completely transparent. It was fun but challenging initially because I hadn't been doing it for a minute, but this time, it was so much more intentional and felt so much more real. And, like, everything before was growing and learning, and I was younger. And, you know, I still had to figure it out, and I hit this point about, when I started this project, I want to say, like, maybe a year and a half, two years ago, where I just knew who I was. But I also wanted to make sure how I came out and introduced myself this time was the baseline of setting the foundation for what's to come. I have done the search rather than just searching, and here are the results of the search.”

She shared on social media, “Can't believe I'm writing these words. The process of creating this project was both challenging yet so beyond rewarding. I've grown in so many ways because of these songs, and I am forever grateful for the ups & downs that inspired me & led me to creating what this EP now is today. I really hope y'all love it & it lives up to the expectations (I know I made y'all WAIT haha).”
Skylar Simone explained some tracks for the EP.
“Shiver”
“I wanted to find that perfect blend of the 90s R&B I grew up listening to and next wave / forward sonics and lyricism that I feel ultimately represent the artist I am, and am striving to be. 'Shiver' is a song from a strong, feminine perspective about communicating how you want to feel. I hope people can relate to it in their own individual way, and that it makes them feel empowered, sexy, and confident.”
“Shut Up”
“One of my favorite things about 'Shut Up' is how playful both lyrically & sonically it is. It also allows me to show my versatility as an artist. Fun fact: The chorus was originally just going to be used as a sample in the background….until we realized that part was too good to not have it play a bigger role in the song!”
