Joy Orbison Premieres New Song “flex fm (freddit)” featuring Lil Yachty, Future, Playboi Carti on BBC Radio 1
London-based music producer and DJ Joy Orbison premiered a new single “flex fm (freddit)” on BBC Radio 1's New Music Show with Jack Saunders.
The song is an edit by London-based music producer Fred again.. of Joy Orbison's “flight fm”, which was released in January.
The track features American rappers Lil Yachty, Future, and Playboi Carti.
Fred again.. first performed the edit version during his shows with Yachty and Overmono at New York venues The Lot Radio and Knockdown Center in February 2024.
Joy Orbison said of the song, “I was thinking about DJ narrows & mampi swift records when I made flight. Also, thinking bout listening to flight and flex fm from my bedroom, back when you had to have that annoying plastic cord thing half way up the wall to listen to any radio station, let alone a pirate. I love that this track has reached so many people outside of any cultural or sonic ideas I had about it, that's one of the most enjoyable things about making music. Basic channel's 'phylps trak ii' was garage to my ears, oizo's 'flat beat' too. Flex was flight but now it's something new, now Atlanta's involved. However you hear it, i hope you enjoy it”- Joy Orbison told Jack Saunders about the song, “Both titles of the tracks are both named after pirate radio stations I grew up on. And that was actually a complete coincidence because Fred chose 'flex fm'”
He continued, “So 'flight fm' was a track I made what I waited for my mate to pick me up to take me to last village festival. And he heard it in the car and we got to the festival and halfway through the set. He was like 'oh you need to play this.' So I played it got a good reaction and a far I'm going to finish it so then that became ''flight fm'. And then by the time ''flight fm' came out there just seem to be, I can't remember Fred's was the first vocal I ever heard over it. But there was a lot of people just making all their different bootlegs of the different versions of it. I think that one came about from when he was in New York with Overmono. And they were doing a show and they were making kind of vocal tracks that had the vocals on. And that was one of them and just seeing I got this video of Yachty listening to it. And it was just kind of amazing feeling really then eventually somehow managed. We managed to get it out.” - source : BBC Radio 1
