Motion City Soundtrack Returns with New Song “Stop Talking” from Original Motion Picture “Dìdi (弟弟)”
American rock band Motion City Soundtrack, consisting of Justin Pierre (lead vocals/rhythm guitar), Joshua Cain (lead guitar), Jesse Johnson (keyboards), Matthew Taylor (bass) and Tony Thaxton (drums), returned with a new song “Stop Talking” on August 8, 2024.
The song is their first music in a decade and features on the original motion picture “Dìdi (弟弟)”.
The track was written by Jesse Johnson, Joshua Cain, Justin Pierre, Matthew Taylor, and Tony Thaxton. Produced by Sean O'Keefe.
The accompanying music video was directed by Sean Wang, who also directed "Dìdi (弟弟)”.
The video coincides with the release of the film, which is out in select theaters on August 9 and nationwide August 16.
The band lead singer Justin Pierre said of the song, “Nostalgia in the era of internet rules. A clip of Sean Wang and Carlos López Estrada, producer of the film Dìdi (弟弟) rocking out during our set at When We Were Young festival last year caused a domino effect, resulting in us releasing our first new song in nearly ten years. We recorded at Steve Albini's legendary Electrical Audio studio with San O'Keefe in the producer seat. He recorded one of our first efforts a thousand years ago (pre I Am The Movie) and it was incredible to get to work with him again.”- The band explained about working with the film, “The road to this song's release is a winding road taken at top speed in a vehicle not meant for such feats of human daring. It starts with our buddy Andy Young noticing a video of Carlos López Estrada & Sean Wang at When We Were Young Festival last year watching MCS. He introduced Carlos & me. We hit it off. Carlos asked for an old MCS song for Sean's film. While in LA working on creative shit with my friend Chelsea Christer, we went to meet Carlos & Sean & the team at their post production facility. I played the 4 new MCS songs we had been working on with Sean OKeefe, & Carlos immediately latched on to Stop Talking, which he more or less described as the internal dialogue of the main character of the film. And that's more or less how we got involved with 'Dìdi (弟弟)'.”
- The band also announced that they are currently working on their seventh studio album.
The band said, “We are recording album #7 at this very moment, & my hope for this record is that it makes some of you feel like I felt when Superchunk's Majesty Shredding came out nearly a decade after their last artistic endeavor. If we can come even 1/10th as close as that, in terms of good vibes, I will consider it a win.”
The film “Dìdi (弟弟)” was directed by Sean Wang in his directorial debut, starring Izaac Wang and Joan Chen.
The film is set in 2008 in the Bay Area, and is a funny, irreverent, and affecting ode to first-generation teenagers navigating the joy and chaos of adolescence as seen through the lens of a 13-year-old Taiwanese American boy, played by Izaac Wang (Good Boys, Disney's Raya and the Last Dragon).
At its premiere in competition at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival it received critical and audience acclaim, winning both the U.S. Dramatic Audience Award and the U.S. Dramatic Special Jury Award for Best Ensemble Cast.
