  • Rainbow Chan Releases New Song “Smoke and Pepper”

  • Hong Kong-Australian singer-songwriter Rainbow Chan released a new song “Smoke and Pepper” on August 2, 2024.

The son is the second single off of her upcoming third studio album “The Bridal Lament”, following “Seven Sisters” released last August.
The new album is her first project since the 2021 EP “Stanley”, and is expected to be released in 2024.
The song is inspired by traditional mourning songs of the Weitou people of Hong Kong and is tribute to her late aunt, who passed away in 2021.
The track was written and produced by Chun Yin Rainbow Chan.

“Lamentation is a powerful way to express profound sorrow, and 'Smoke and Pepper' embodies this intensity,” Rainbow Chan said of the song. “The loss of a loved one can be disorienting beyond words. For me, composing 'Smoke and Pepper' was a way to externalize the waves of grief that consumed me. It's a half-sung, half-cried journey that reaches out to the skies and beyond.”
  • Rainbow Chan shared on social media, “I wrote this song intending it to never be heard by anyone else. But I'm glad that I befriended grief and am able to share it with you.”

She continued, “It was the final days of Autumn when I found out she was dying. I recall so vividly the smell of chimneys and decay, of smoke and pepper. My eyes stung from trying to hold back tears as I walked to work, carrying on as though nothing was wrong. When she later passed, I spoke to a colleague who'd lost someone too. He said the weirdest feeling is that the world moves on without that person, almost like they never existed. Every time I sing this song, I remind myself that she was here. I remind myself that she is nowhere and everywhere at once. I hope you take a moment to listen.”
