Amy Shark Teams Up With Tom DeLonge for New Song “My Only Friend”
Australian alt-pop singer-songwriter Amy Shark teamed up with American rock band blink-182's guitarist Tom DeLonge to release a new song “My Only Friend” on July 26, 2024.
This marks the first collaboration between Amy Shark and Tom DeLonge. But Amy Shark has worked with other members of blink-182: “Psycho” with Mark Hoppus in 2018 and “C’mon” with Travis Barker in 2020.
The song is the fifth single off of her upcoming third studio album “Sunday Sadness”, which is set to be released on August 16, 2024.
The track was written by Amy Billings, and produced by Dann Hume, and Aaron Rubin.
The song was written in 2018 as “Alien”. But she had to changed the title of the song, because Tom DeLonge was under scrutiny from the US government due to his obsession with extraterrestrial life.
Amy Shark explained, “He was like, ‘Hey, can we change the hook so I can be on it? I’ll show you'. It used to be ‘You’re the alien in the room’. And now it’s ‘You’re my only friend in the room.’”- Amy Shark told Wall Of Sound about the song, “The dream was always to have Tom sing on a song with me. He has such an iconic voice [that] everyone around the world knows it. I wrote ‘My Only Friend’ a while ago. I tracked the song in Sydney and also parts in Wales and Tom recorded his vocals in his studio in San Diego. He was all in from day one and has been an incredible collaborator on this song.”
She continued, “It’s pretty crazy to think that this actually wasn’t planned or orchestrated in any way. It started with Mark and that wasn’t planned either. Then Travis obviously heard ‘Psycho’ then reached out, so yeah by album three it was obviously going to make complete sense to have Tom on the album.” - source : Apple Music
