  • Ruti Shares New Song “Lungs” from New EP on BBC Radio 1

  • British singer-songwriter Ruti released her new EP “Lungs” on May 24, 2024.

It is her first body of work since the 2023 debut mixtape “MixTea_MilkTape!”
The EP comprises a 4-track, including a cover of Tears For Fears's 1985 “Everybody Wants To Rule the World”, produced by Jo Caleb and KHUSHI.
From the EP, she shared the title track “Lungs” on BBC Radio 1's Future Artists with Sian Eleri.
The accompanying music video was directed by Freddie Cattaneo.

Ruti said of the song, “I've actually been holding onto Lungs for a little while. Looking back I think I was a bit scared about how raw the emotion was especially coming from a very small period of my life that inspired the song. I was a very anxious 19/20 year old and remember having really strong feelings about a person – the whole thing made me very unsure and insecure, especially because I didn't ever really know what they were thinking. I was prone to having panic attacks at that time also – loss of breath was quite a big symptom. Hence the line “you might as well take my lungs away, cos I can't breathe around you anyway.” I was panicking about this unknown and I was so in my head. I'd created something out of not much at all. But every little bit of attention they gave me I was lapping it up and then kinda left hanging and rinse and repeat.”
  • She continued, “Looking back the scenario makes me laugh a bit, but I'm glad I didn't hold back in the studio with my co-writers Emily Phillips and Wayne Wilkins. There's so much drama, and the strings played but Davide Rossi, paired with the visuals, filmed at St John the Baptist's in Shepherds Bush, is cinematic if i do say so myself! The most gorgeous sanctuary feels like the right place to be vulnerable and pouring my heart out like I am in this song.“

  • Ruti explained about other tracks for the EP.

    “Bubblehouse Bounce”
“It was quite a happy accident really. It all stemmed from just messing around with some crushed Tom drum samples in my apartment. I've never made a dance track before, but I knew I wanted to write about finding belonging and community through dance and celebration. You know those nights when you don't really wanna go out for whatever reason, but you do and you end up having an amazing time because you feel free. You kinda become one with the crowd and don't have to carry weight on your own.”

    “Don't Make a Sound”
“I haven't stopped listening to this song since the session we started it! It literally blows my mind every time, I'm so proud. Wrote this one with my boys KHUSHI and Mr. Joe Caleb - so much love for them.”
