  • Romy Premieres New Song “Always Forever” on BBC Radio 1

  • London-based singer-songwriter and The xx member, Romy premiered a new song “Always Forever” on BBC Radio 1's New Music Show with Jack Saunders.

The song is the first music since the 2023 debut album “Mid Air”.
This time, Romy worked with British record producer Fred again.. and London-based DJ duo Joy Anonymous on the track.
The song is an interpolation of Welsh singer-songwriter Donna Lewis's 1996 song “I Love You Always Forever”.
The track was written by Donna Lewis, Fred Gibson, Henry Counsell, and Romy Madley Croft. Produced by Romy Madley Croft, Fred again.., and Joy Anonymous.

Romy told Jack Saunders about the song, “I mean, the original Donna Lewis track is very much that it's just euphoria and so much love. And I think we were excited to keep that but for me, like writing lyrics around it as a big pressure. This is a classic song, but I wanted to add to the like, I don't know some emotion to the verses to say like, it's okay to be sad, like wherever you're going through, you can talk to me, you can take it out on me, and I love you regardless. And I wanted to just try and share that balance between just the obviously undying euphoria but also acknowledge sometimes things are hard, sometimes it's easy to like hold things in.”
  • She continued, “I mean, I actually really struggle saying how I feel sometimes, so putting it in a song helps me. And I think like with Strong that you just play before it's again like, sometimes I still need to hear that myself, to be able to like remember to open up to people, so it kind of helps. It's like music is therapy.”

Romy said of working with Fred again.., “It is quite a few years now. And we went back in the group chat with them with Fred and we were like, wow, this is it's really time for this to be out. And Fred's been playing the original out in DJ sets, and when I've seen him play and seen the reaction, I was like, let's just we've got to finish this track. So I'm so happy that it's finally out.”

  • The accompanying music video was directed by Charlotte Wells.

Romy said of the video, “I mean, that's the exciting thing about sampling and like covering songs is you can bring them to a new audience and then they can discover that artists. And it's great and also going back into the music videos of that era as well because that's 1996. I've got the video just came out as well, I guess right now, I just want to give a shout out to Charlotte Wells who directed the video, and there was a lot of references to the original video that she wanted to make, and some videos from the 90s.”
