  • Barry Can't Swim Premieres New Song “Kimbara” on BBC Radio 1

  • London-based Scottish DJ Joshua Mainnie, aka Barry Can't Swim premiered a new song “Kimbara” on BBC Radio 1's New Music Show with Jack Saunders.

This marks his first music since the 2023 album “When Will We Land”.
The song samples multi-GRAMMY-award-winning Cuban artist Celia Cruz's 1974 salsa recording “Quimbara”.
The track was written by Joshua Mainnie, Junior Cepeda, and Luis Rios Cepeda. Produced by Barry Can't Swim.

Barry Can't Swim said of the song, “Been a minute since I've written something for the clubs! It's the first thing I've made since releasing my album back in Oct, and I can't lie it feels good to be back writing music again after a bit of time touring.”
  • Barry Can't Swim told Jack Saunders about the song, “That was intentional as well. I think I've spent a good most part of a year right in kind of songs and stuff that kind of felt a bit more like downtempo and more songwriters. So I've been playing live a while, so when I came back out I was I really sort of was itching to write something for clubs, and something that was on me, it felt like, it could be in a minute since I done that.”

  • He said of sampling “Quimbara”, “I thought you know what, like, for the nostalgia of it more than anything, I was like I'm gonna catch them all. I never did it.”

He continued, “I think there was I first found out about caribou through that I think it was maybe Odessa was on there like ages ago. I ended up buying the vinyl and then became a fan ever since, but I'm sure that's off the top of my head how I discovered that.”
