  • laye Releases New Song “unhappier”

  • Montreal-based singer-songwriter laye released a new song “unhappier” on July 14, 2023.

The song is the follow-up to “touching myself”, which was released back in May.
It was written by Leah Darwent, Leah Darwent, and Oscar Neidhardt who also produced the track.
The accompanying music video was directed by Sandeep Vadlamudi and Chadrick Preuss.
“'unhappier' is a song about heartbreak, but also about love,” laye said of the song. “My hope is that people find comfort in the mundane emotions of jealousy, unhappiness and really find some solace in the fact that those feelings are universal.”
She continued, “This song was written for someone who is looking toward the end of a relationship, while still being in the relationship. It's a breakup song written from the perspective of someone who really doesn't wish that person well. At the root of it, though, it's still a love song. So many songs are either all about I love you or all about I hate you, but it's also more true to the human experience to feel different and sometimes contradictory things at the same time.”
  • She added, “Not every songwriting session clicks, but this one did right away. We felt like we all caught a wave together. I was focused on putting together the live show, something that could easily translate on a stage. After my 2019 album lonesome was released, there was a long break of not doing sessions and writing things, and it took some experimentation. When I wrote 'unhappier,' I knew I had locked in on a sound that felt like me. This was the feeling I wanted to have and find. Every song I write leads me closer to the direction I want to go. 'unhappier' has brought me closest to the sound I wanted to be making.”

  • The track will appear on her upcoming EP.
laye shared on social media, “This is such a surreal feeling!!! This song means so freaking much to me. You're gunna hear this a bunch from me in the next little bit but this song helped shape so much of my upcoming project.”
