Leanne Hoffman Releases New Album “The Text Collector”
Canadian singer-songwriter Leanne Hoffman released her sophomore album “The Text Collector” on June 23, 2023.
It is her first album in four years since the 2019 debut album “What Remains”.
The album is born from 365 poems that she wrote over the course of the year.
She published the poetry collection of the same name and the album consists of 8 songs and 7 poems. Produced by Erin Costelo and Leanne Hoffman.
Leanne Hoffman said of the album, “This whole project was born from 365 poems that I wrote over the course of the year, and many of them came from words I cut out of books. Both the poetry collection and album of songs are titled The Text Collector. I wanted to continue the life cycle of those poems, and make them into something completely different. A lot of time has passed since writing the poetry and then turning it into lyrics, so I've found that some of the songs on this album have a completely different meaning than before. I like how intimate poetry can be, and in contrast, I love how accessible and open pop music can be.”- She continued, “I have always loved pop music, so I wanted to create something like the albums I grew up listening to, but with the words and intent of my poems. Co-produced with award-winning producer Erin Costelo, she helped make these works more accessible and prolong the life of my project. Some of the songs say things I've been looking to say for a long time—I just couldn't really get there. Having a poem that says it perfectly already means I didn't have to search for the words. Because when I was writing the poems, I wasn't thinking about songs. I was thinking, how do I perfectly express this thing that I feel? With an overarching theme of self-discovery and self-awareness, each track represents a distinct feeling I've grappled with over the past few years.”
She added, “While my debut album, What Remains, was also quite introspective, this new curation is coming from a place of acceptance. It's all of the questions and observations I've collected after silently committing to myself through these poems. And now, they're packaged in an energetic, danceable production.” -
“Pity Party”
“Everyone knows someone that always seems to be bringing the good vibes down. No matter what, they just aren't happy, especially if everyone else is. I think it can be really tiring to deal with someone like that, so I wanted to write something fun and unbothered - something to say, 'You're not going to ruin this for me.' Basically, this is a "fuck you" song you can dance to!”
“Portuguese Tarts”
“I wrote the poems that would eventually become this song back in 2019. I wrote this song with the intention of doing something new. Not NEW new, but new for me. I had all of these poems and I wanted to make them into a song, and I wanted it to feel different, because I wanted to feel different. If you know me, you know I love a challenge. I love a challenge because I love finding out what I'm capable of, and Portuguese Tarts has been a wonderful challenge.”
“King Size Bed”
"King Size Bed," was inspired by the end of my relationship. It's about wanting less of someone when they're there, and wishing you had more of them when they're gone. When my partner and I moved in together, we bought a "King Size Bed" so we could have enough space to ourselves. When we broke up, I was left with the bed that all of a sudden felt way too big for me.
