Marcus Mumford Releases Debut Solo Album “(self-titled)”: Streaming
Lead singer of British folk rock band Mumford & Sons and singer-songwriter, Marcus Mumford released his debut solo album “(self-titled)” on September 16, 2022.
He recorded 10 songs with producer Blake Mills in Los Angeles.
On the album, Mumford & Sons' member performed some songs. But he had refused to admit he was making a solo album at that time.
He told The Guardian, “Even up to last November, when I was in the studio, I was refusing to call it a solo album. Because once you switch to thinking of it as an album, then you inevitably start thinking about labels, how you present it to the world, how people will listen to it and I thought: nothing can distract from writing this, I can't start thinking about how people will listen to it, or how I'm going to talk about it, or the live show.”
Finally, the album took 18 months and its brevity was the result of advice from Elton John.- xCAxFuN371Y
Marcus Mumford told Apple Music, “Elton John, who was a real inspiration from the beginning of this process, sat me down early on and was like, 'You are not allowed to make more than 10 songs.' It brings this intentionality. Every song has to fight for its place. So, that meant that we edited hard—really hard.”
The album features vivid, and at times harrowing, songs about the sexual abuse Mumford experienced as a six-year-old, and the therapeutic journey his life has taken since.
Marcus Mumford said, “It's a record about freedom and it's a record about healing.”
The album features guest appearances from Phoebe Bridgers, Brandi Carlile, Clairo, and Monica Martin.-
Marcus Mumford explained of some tracks for the album.
“Cannibal” via GQ
“In January 2021, facing demons I danced with for a long time. In isolation, I wrote a song called 'Cannibal' I took it to my friend Blake
Mills, and we began the process of making this album, dear to my heart, called (self-titled). I know the chords she (his mother) likes. So she hears it through the walls, like, 'That sounds nice. Can I come hear it?' Like lots of people—and I'm learning more and more about this as we go and as I play it to people—I was sexually abused as a child. Not by family and not in the church, which might be some people's assumption. But I hadn't told anyone about it for 30 years. The power of the mind. Couple days later 'Can I ask what that song's about?' I was like, 'Yeah, it's about the abuse thing.' She was like, 'What are you talking about?' So once we get through the trauma of that moment for her, as a mother, hearing that and her wanting to protect and help and all that stuff, it's objectively fucking hilarious to tell your mom about your abuse in a fucking song, of all things.”

“We've had lots of conversations which have been really helpful to me over the years. I asked her (Phoebe Bridgers) whether she'd be down to come and hear something and whether she wanted to sing on it. I played her where 'Stonecatcher' was at and she goes, 'Dude, did you get the word 'heinous' into a song?' I said, 'Yes'. She was like, 'I'll sing on it!'” - source : Apple Music
