The album is his first LP in two years and completed a trilogy of song collections, the 2019 album “Absolute Zero” and the 2020 album “Non-Secure Connection”, based on film “cues” Hornsby composed for writer and director Spike Lee.
His goal on the album was to make a more upbeat record overall, speaking on COVID-19 using the world of science as a recurring influence.
Bruce Hornsby said, “The album title 'Flicted relates to this strange time in which we live, when the world is basically, well, 'flicted.”
The album comprises 12-track, featuring guest appearances from Ezra Koenig, Blake Mills, Danielle Haim, Z. Berg, Ethan Gruska, yMusic and Rob Moose.
He recorded the album last summer. Co-produced by Bruce Hornsby and Tony Berg.- 12-track includes the first single “Sidelines” featuring American rock band Vampire Weekend's Ezra Koenig and American guitarist Blake Mills. Bruce Hornsby said of the spng, “'Sidelines' is a song about hysteria in various forms, starting with the Salem witch trials of the 1600's then to the present-day pandemic-era panic. It features angular melodic content vocally and a pointillistic middle instrumental section.”
Also, the album features his first ever cover song, Chuck Berry's “Too Much Monkey Business”. He said, “'Too Much Monkey Busines' is a first for me, a cover song on a studio record. Leon Russell and I arranged this Chuck Berry song years ago and I wanted to revisit what we did and give it an update.”
The video for “Days Ahead” features American rock band Haim's Danielle Haim. Bruce Hornsby said of the song, “This song features Danielle Haim on lead and background vocals throughout, and Rob Moose on strings. It's piece with Brian Wilson feels and vibes, and Covid-era lyrics again courtesy of Chip deMatteo.” - source : Apple Music
