  • Foals Premieres New Song “2am” on BBC Radio 1

  • British rock band Foals, consisting of Yannis Philippakis, Jack Bevan and Jimmy Smith, premiered a new song “2am” on BBC Radio 1's Future Sounds with Clara Amfo.

The song will appear on their upcoming seventh studio album “Life Is Yours”, which is expected to be released this summer.
It was written by Yannis Philippakis, Jack Bevan and Jimmy Smith. Produced by John Hill and Dan Carey.
Yannis Philippakis said of the song, “Musically '2am' is one of the poppiest songs we've ever written. It's about repetitive cycles of destructive behaviour, which I think lots of people can relate to, and certainly it's an expression of something that I struggle with. There's something cathartic about expressing that feeling to this upbeat music that's got a sense of release and the hope of resolution.”
He continued, “The lyrics tap into the idea of trying to wake up after the fever dream and terrible nightmare of the last 18 months. We really wanted to revel in the power of rhythm and music and what that brings to your body, heart and soul. It's an absolute banger of a track and feels joyous and full of light to us.”
  • Yannis Philippakis told Clara Amfo, “It was accidental. I mean, so I don't normally write on the sense but I had a sensor at the house and I just wrote the chord sequence and then I was kind of mumbling some lyrics into my phone that we're about 2am and it was basically the verse just kind of came together and one evening, so it wasn't forced. And it just felt good all the way from that night, right until when we finished recording. It was just one where every time we would work on it again, it just felt good. And so we knew that there was something powerful in that and something like worth pursuing and it might not be the happiest thing ever. But it's definitely up there for us.”
He added, “Totally. I think it was weird that that lyric came out unprompted. In the middle of lockdown. I guess, I was just really craving that by you know, the thing that I definitely I'm sure, for lots of people as well but like really struggled with the lack of nightlife and the lack of that type of socializing. It's like, go for a walk in the parks one thing but it's just, it doesn't cut it.”

  • The new album is their first LP in thee years. He said of the new album, “The album is called 'Life Is Yours'. It's a lyric and a sentiment that is explicit in the album and runs through a lot of tracks in the album and they just felt like the right title. It just felt like big and generous and optimistic. And it just felt like the right message to be sending out after the last couple years and it just sort of perfectly sums up the vibe of the record and then seize the day you kind of go out there. Have a great time be with your friends again and appreciate every moment. So that's it. 'Life Is Yours'.”
