  • World Surf League: Hurley Pro Round 3 at Trestles, Kanoa Igarashi vs. Mick Fanning No Score & Re-Surf

  • WSL Men's Championship, Hurley Pro Round 3 ran at Lower Trestles in four-to-five foot waves on September 13.

    You see the next level and era by the world's best surfers. In Round 3, most of competitors surfed with the aerial and vertical approach. Especially Sebastian Zietz (HAW) earned 9.43 points, Jordy Smith (ZAF) gained double 9.47 points, John John Florence (HAW) received 9.27 and 9.80 points.
    But, despite the former World Champ Gabriel Medina (BRA) earned 7.70 and 7.20 points with the aerial, he was defeated by Jadson Andre (BRA).
    Also wild card participation Evan Geiselman (USA) and Hiroto Ohhara (JPN) could not advance to Round 4.
    When Mick Fanning (AUS) and Kanoa Igarashi (USA) began Heat 9 of Round 3, their Heat was applied with the new rules interpretation.
    So, both surfers have to compete again at the beginning of the heat tomorrow, today's result was disabled with no scores.

    Commissioner Kieren Perrow explained the situatuin of Heat 9;
    "Unfortunately at the start of that heat with Mick [Fanning ] and Kanoa [Igarashi], there was a situation where the blocking rule -- that has come into effect at this event -- was used and priority was under review at the time and there hadn't been a decision to switch it, which was the decision of the panel, the head judge, and priority judge. Time passed and Kanoa took off on a wave in that period of time, and that wave proved to be an incredible wave and a great score. That heat played out entirely differently to how it would've otherwise and following a review at the end of the heat we're going to re-surf it.
    We've talked with the athletes quite a lot about bringing this in. Everyone felt that it was really fair and the right thing to be putting in place. It just allows for a fairer way to the start of a heat to play out for our surfers who are looking for waves, or paddling into waves early, are unable to block someone from their outside from taking off on that wave. That's the simple kind of essence of it. It just allows for more surfing to happen right at the beginning of the heat."
